HE TOOK RUNNING INTO HAND
AND GOT BACK HIS LIFE
“The accident occurred in December 2007 on the way to a home visit. A lorry hit my car without braking. The effects: The spinal cord in my cervical spine was severely damaged. I was struck by the pain and the dreadful prospect of no longer being able to move without help. I could no longer rely on my usual dexterity of hands and feet, and my vegetative nervous system was also completely changed,” reports Dr. Horst Schüler.
“Within a very short time my range of movement, my walking and later even my running distances increased. Because of its mouse-like shape, I called the handpiece I had made from air plasticine to help me walk upright again LAUFMAUS®.
There is always a clever mind behind innovative products. In the case of the LAUFMAUS® there is also a very personal, tragic life event. In this respect, the story of the invention of the LAUFMAUS® cannot be told without the story about its inventor.
As a specialist, sports and general practitioner and osteopath, Dr. med. Horst Schüler from Münster, Germany had always been a doctor and sportsman with a passion. He took a holistic view of his patients and the human body. He considered life and his work to be a continuous development. Whether it was the latest findings in biomechanics, orthopaedics or diagnostics or old knowledge from traditional Chinese medicine, philosophy or naturopathy that had to be reactivated – Horst Schüler had always been curious and very open to new ideas and findings.
For the benefit of his patients, he delved deeply into medicine and many areas of the natural sciences. He would never have thought that the tireless “doc” would become a patient himself and would have to struggle back into his own life with all his knowledge and skills. One day in 2007 changed everything.
The consequences of his car accident were dramatic: the formerly energetic doctor was tied to the bed. For the time being, surgery seemed too risky to his surgical colleagues. In this way, immobility and chronic pain became his sad companions in a completely new everyday life. He had no control over his arms and legs, he was excluded from professional and social life. When he finally found a surgeon and underwent surgery a year later, about a 50 percent improvement in his physical condition after the operation was the result. However, this was not satisfactory. Especially for a man whose central cornerstones in life were health, work, freedom and exercise.
But Dr. Horst Schüler didn’t give up. From now on, he fought his way back into life.
He recalls: “Since physiotherapists didn’t work miracles in this time and couldn’t take away the pain and the cramps in my limbs. Therefore I tried my own rehab program. I prepared myself for long years to come and it would then be the biblical number of seven (years) until I was free of symptoms again. At some point I decided to put my arms and hands in a relief position that reduced the cramps: I bent my arms and my palms faced upwards. In this position my entire body began to relax.”
Having found this this relieving effect resulting from the special arm and hand position, he made his own device, which affected exactly this relieving position.
The birth of LAUFMAUS®.
After months of tinkering and the first laboriously manufactured attempts in his own garage, a product that had never existed before was created. The hands had previously been completely ignored by sports medicine and sports science in their importance for the posture and straightening of the whole body. But the hands were the solution. And the LAUFMAUS®was the key, which Dr. Horst Schüler held now in his hands.
Meanwhile, Dr. Horst Schüler is almost 70 years old. The consequences of his spinal cord injury and paralysis are reduced to a minimum. He regularly goes for runs in the park, but also takes part in running events. With the LAUFMAUS® he has improved his posture and body tension over the years to such an extent that he has not only found his outer but also his inner support.
It is a matter of the heart for him to use his LAUFMAUS® and to make via their hands people’s legs up again.
In the meantime, the lone fighter has become a whole development team consisting of doctors, sports scientists, engineers and product specialists. Everyone was so enthusiastic about the idea of the LAUFMAUS® that over a five-year development period, Schüler’s prototype made of modelling clay has undergone a similar metamorphosis as the once paralysed doctor himself.
Today’s LAUFMAUS® is an ergonomically shaped, computer-designed, high-quality tool with 17 patented product properties in terms of shape and functionality, the exceptional effect of which has been tested and confirmed by numerous sports scientists and medical professionals.
With the LAUFMAUS® the extraordinary story of Dr. Horst Schüler continues to live in many hands from now …
